Whispering Jack Show

Whispering Jack Show

Went along to Newcastle Panthers on Friday night to photograph the Whispering Jack Show, a tribute show to the music of John Farnham and catch up with an old gigging mate. For such a great show the turnout was a little disappointing, but thats Newcastle, and exactly the reason that all the great local live music venues are closing and putting in pokies instead.

Considering they were using the delapidated inhouse PA, Mike Vee being the showman he is, still pulled out the big hits and bad jokes and put on an entertaining night for the people who were there. Although small, it was a very vocal crowd and if the calls for more at the end were anything to go on, I think everyone had a great night.

I had a big rant drafted up about the bad state of Panthers at the moment, but decided to pull it in the interest of my own sanity, it was getting out of hand. I will reduce it to this…. I have worked in the music industry for over 12 years, I know thats not very long compared to some, but its long enough to see the further demise of Newcastle’s live music venues. For a venue that used to be an icon in Newcastles live music scene it is embarrassing to see how badly the place needs money spent on maintenance and upgrades production wise. Panthers obviously doesnt care about its Newcastle investment evident by the severe lack of touring acts to grace their main auditorium stage lately and state of disrepair that the inhouse rigs are in at the moment. I was embarrassed for the guys on stage to have to play through the abomination that Panthers calls a PA, but due to the bands commitment to their fans the show had to go on. End of small rant.

If you get the chance next time they are in a town near you, go check out the Whispering Jack Show, its a brilliant stage show when they have a PA and Lighting rig around them that works.

  1. Hi Tim, Having played many gigs over 25 years at “The Workers Club”, I too was shocked at the state of the inhouse equipment. The soundguy did what he could, but it was major struggle. Thanks for the great pics, Chris Lee – Bassist – Whispering Jack Show.

  2. Chris – I agree, the soundguy did what he could with substandard equipment. He was lucky that you guys are such good musos.

Its a pity that Panthers have let it get so bad because they have a great venue going to waste.

  4. I have heard about these guys… wouldn’t mind seeing them, though have seen the real thing… I am sure these guys are just as good… I listen to my Johnny Farnham CD while driving down the roads here in the US singing away there… it is fun…

  5. Hi Tim. Great pic’s of the jack show.As far as Panthers is concerned you have hit the nail on the head.As you know I was the inhouse engineers, now you know one of the reasons I left. But I really think that you where a little tame on the comments about the venue.I’d really stuck it up them. The comments and concerns should be emailed to Penrith Panthers.
The string pullers, so to speak.Anyway I could go on and on, but we all know the score,Shame, Shame,Shame on you Panthers, just keep digger your grave deeper, which you seem to have no trouble at doing.
    See at the wedding.

  6. Tony – I will try to make it to the 16’s to get some photos that really do the show justice.

Greg – I held back because I wanted this post to be about the Whispering Jack Show not how bad panthers inhouse systems are.
